Writing this letter to my dad was so therapeutic. I laughed, I cried and I reflected. I was able to get all of the words out my head and heart onto paper. I have been putting it off as I didn't know how to get the feelings in my heart to flow properly. I am so grateful for this experience and it made me feel closer to him by writing it out. It was very fulfilling.
Daddy,
As my 40th birthday approaches, I find myself thinking of you more than ever. I wonder what you would say, how you’d guide me through challenges, and if you’d be proud. I realize now how much it meant to hear you say those words.
Since your transition, I’ve carried out your wishes—honoring your service, remaining in communication with my siblings, and keeping bonds with the friends you placed in my life. I’ve been promoted three times, bought a home, loved deeply, welcomed a poodle (your favorite), visited Miami, and even checked off a few dream milestones.
I don’t know how you managed to keep up with everyone so consistently, but I admire it. People still tell me about their weekly talks and emails with you, and it reminds me of the steady presence you always were. I miss our conversations.
To me, you were always my toasted marshmallow—tough on the outside, tender at the core. I cherish memories of you saying “I love you” after every call, cooking my favorite meals, folding my laundry, or encouraging me when I wanted to give up. You celebrated me, guided me, and even challenged me when I needed it most.
Your lessons stay with me, especially about being equally yoked in relationships—finding a partner who hustles with you through life’s storms. That wisdom shapes how I love and live today.

I could write forever, but I’ll end with your words: I love you first.
Always,
Makeya
